Väestön ikääntymisen myötä myös muistisairaudet yleistyvät.
Aiemmissa tutkimuksissa on osoitettu elämätapojen kuten terveellisen ravitsemuksen ja liikunnan alentavan dementiariskiä. Tutkimusnäyttö liikunnan yhteydestä dementiaan on kuitenkin ollut ristiriitaista: kaikissa tutkimuksissa liikunnan suojavaikutusta ei ole pystytty osoittamaan. Tämän on esitetty johtuvan muun muassa liian lyhyestä seuranta-ajasta, liikunnan tehokkuudesta tai vaikutusta muokkaavista tekijöistä kuten sukupuolesta, painoindeksistä, iästä tai Alzheimerin taudin perinnöllisistä riskitekijöistä.
Nyt julkaistussa Itä-Suomen yliopistossa tehdyssä tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että keski-iässä liikuntaa vähintään kahdesti viikossa harrastaneet sairastuivat harvemmin dementiaan kuin ne, jotka harrastivat vähemmän liikuntaa. Suojaava yhteys havaittiin koko tutkimusväestössä, mutta se oli erityisen voimakas ylipainoisilla ja lihavilla henkilöillä. Tulosten perusteella liikunnan hyötyvaikutukset eivät selity muilla elämäntavoilla, terveydentilalla tai sukupuolella. Hyödyt vaikuttaisivat myös olevan erityisen suuria ylipainoisilla henkilöillä. Myös ne henkilöt, joilla on perinnöllinen alttius muistisairauksiin, hyötyvät liikunnasta.
Vaikka keski-iän elämäntapojen merkitys muistisairauksien ehkäisyssä onkin kiistaton, tulosten perusteella myös vanhemmalla iällä aloitettu liikuntaharrastus voi suojata dementialta. Useat meneillään olevat tutkimukset selvittävät parhaillaan, onko liikunnan muodolla, kestolla tai intensiteetillä merkitystä.
