YLE:n Ajantasa-ohjelma käsitteli hiljattain D-vitamiinia teemalla: ”Syödäänkö D-vitamiinia vieläkin liian vähän?”
Haastattelussa naistentautien ja synnytysten erikoislääkäri Hannu Vierola arvostelee kovin sanoin ravitsemustieteilijöiden liian alhaisia D-vitamiinisuosituksia. Vierola vaatii, että globaali D-vitamiininpuutepandemia tulisi hoitaa välittömästi kuntoon suosittelemalla suurempia D-vitamiinimääriä väestötasolla.
Vierola myös kritisoi ravitsemustieteilijöiden tapaa pelotella D-vitamiinin liikasaannista. Hänen mukaansa D-vitamiinin liikasaanti on erittäin harvinaista. D-vitamiinin alhainen pitoisuus veressä on usean sairauden riskin takana ja esimerkiksi 70 prosenttia odottavista äideistä kärsii D-vitamiinin puutteesta, joka on riski myös syntymättömälle lapselle.
Suomen virallinen suositus 10 mikrogrammaa D-vitamiinia on aivan liian alhainen ja suosituksen tulisi olla 30–100 mikrogrammaa odottaville äideille, joka sopisi kaikille aikuisille. Lapsille vähintään 20 mikrogrammaa. Kansainvälinen osteoporoosilääkärikollegio suosittelee 75 mikrogrammaa ja tällä olisi vaikutusta myös syöpä- ja diabetesvaaran alenemiseen.
